Steuben County Fair ... A Tradition

Anyone who grew up in Steuben County experiences a wave of nostalgia when the annual fair dates for August are announced. Now in its 206th year, the Steuben County Fair continues to embody that charming small-town essence, featuring a vibrant midway, a strong emphasis on agriculture, engaging grandstand shows, fascinating historical exhibits, and mouthwatering food.

The inaugural Steuben County Fair, officially recognized by the Agricultural Society, took place in 1819. At its inception, it featured nine categories for judging, awarding prizes to exhibitors of cattle, sheep, and produce, with horse racing quickly emerging as a popular draw. Over two centuries later, the fair proudly showcases the county’s agricultural heritage through livestock exhibitions and an extensive display of antique farm equipment and engines.

In one corner of the fairgrounds lies a quaint one-room schoolhouse and a log cabin museum, inviting visitors to step back into a simpler era. This corner of the fair remains unchanged and beckons attendees year after year—it's a cherished tradition.

The fair kicks off on Monday, August 11th, but the thrills of the Coleman Brothers carnival and attractions don’t ignite until 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13th, continuing through Sunday, August 17th. Remember the enchantment of your first carousel ride and the exhilarating rush of those ‘big kid’ rides that you grew to love?

Who can forget the delectable fair food that instantly makes one's mouth water, just recalling last year's visit? Whether it's sizzling sausage, burgers, and hot dogs fresh off the grill, warm fried dough, sugary waffles, or the delightful sweetness of candy apples and cotton candy, everyone has a favorite, ensuring no one leaves the fairgrounds hungry!

Returning in 2025 are beloved attractions like Rosaire’s Royal Racing Pigs, Oscar The Robot, and the Party Animals Petting Zoo, all included with admission.

Thursday, August 14th, marks Youth Day, where individuals aged 18 and under gain free admission until 5 p.m. Don’t miss the bike helmet giveaway by the Steuben County Sheriff's Office from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sheriff’s Office pavilion. Another Youth Day will also take place on Saturday, August 16th.

Livestock shows commence on Tuesday, August 12th, culminating in the annual Livestock Sale at 1 p.m. Tradition runs deep at the fair.
