🎨 Winter at the Arts Center of Yates County:

Where Creativity Warms the Coldest Days

There’s something about winter in Penn Yan that invites reflection — the hush of snow over the rooftops, the soft glow of lamplight on Main Street, the way the lake seems to exhale a silvery mist into the morning air. While many of us retreat into cozy corners with coffee and good books, there’s a place downtown where warmth takes a different form — the vibrant, glowing heart of local artistry.

At 127 Main Street, the Arts Center of Yates County turns the quiet season into a celebration of creativity. As the snowflakes fall, the Flick Gallery bursts into color — a winter showcase of regional artists whose work reminds us that even the coldest months have their own palette of beauty. From delicate watercolors of frozen vineyards to bold oil landscapes capturing the deep blues of Keuka Lake, each piece tells a story rooted in this place we call home.

❄️ The Winter Exhibit: Art That Feels Like a Hearth Fire

The current winter exhibit, running through the early months of the new year, features a rotating collection of paintings, pottery, and photography inspired by the natural rhythm of the Finger Lakes seasons. There’s something mesmerizing about how these artists capture the gentle weight of snow on barn roofs, the shimmer of ice along the shoreline, or the warmth of a farmhouse window seen from the road at dusk.

Hand-thrown mugs, hand-woven scarves, and small-batch jewelry pieces add tactile charm to the gallery’s shelves — each one crafted with patience, heart, and the kind of skill that only comes from years of practice and a deep love for community. It’s the perfect place to find a meaningful holiday gift, or simply a little spark of inspiration to carry you through the long winter nights.

🖌️ Workshops, Warmth & Whimsy

Above the gallery, the Rosenfeld Studio remains a lively hub even as winter settles in around the lake. Inside, the chill gives way to creativity — where local instructors lead small-group workshops in painting, fiber arts, and mixed media. From cozy knitting circles to first-time watercolor explorations, there’s something deeply comforting about creating alongside others while snow drifts past the windows.

This season also brings back the ever-popular “Art of Wine” classes, where local winemakers share insights into their craft — from vine to vintage — with tastings that celebrate the fruits of their labor. Plans are already underway to expand these experiences to include our region’s talented cider makers, promising even more flavorful artistry ahead.

And for those who draw inspiration from the water, the Arts Center’s seasonal property, Sunny Point on Keuka Lake, now rests quietly under its winter blanket — a peaceful muse awaiting the return of spring and the creative energy it always stirs to life.

For more than half a century, this Center has been a haven for those who see beauty in the everyday and who believe that art, like friendship, grows deeper with time.
