πΏ Rooted in the Land: The Story of Apple Barrel Orchards
πΏ Rooted in the Land:
The Story of Apple Barrel Orchards
There are places around Keuka that feel like they’ve always been there…
not just in structure, but in spirit.
Apple Barrel Orchards is one of those places.
Because long before the cider was poured, before the market welcomed visitors, before the deck overlooked rows of trees stretching toward the horizon… there was land. And there were hands willing to tend it.
πΎ The First Roots
In the early to mid-1900s, Forrest and Olive Wager saw something in this land.
Not just soil—but possibility.
They built a life here the way so many did in those days—through hard work and quiet determination. Cows and chickens filled the farm. Apples, grapes, cherries, black raspberries, and peaches grew in rhythm with the seasons. It wasn’t just a farm… it was a way of life.
π Carrying It Forward
In 1961, the next chapter began when Charles and Barbara Wager took over from Forrest and Olive. The crops remained much the same, but something deeper took hold—continuity.
The kind that doesn’t need to be announced.
The kind that simply is.
By 1991, Bernard and Roxanne Wager stepped into stewardship, gently shifting the focus toward producing the very best apples, grapes, and cherries—not just for harvest, but for fresh markets, juice, and wine. The land evolved… but it never lost itself.
π A Name Comes Home
In 1994, Bernie and Roxanne added another layer to the story—purchasing the Apple Barrel business from Bernie’s uncle, Robert Wager.
A family name.
A family legacy.
And in 2005, that legacy quite literally came home—relocated from Wager Hill Road to the family farm on Sand Hill Road in Penn Yan. It was more than a move… it was a full-circle moment decades in the making.
πΏ The Fourth Generation
By 2020, the land welcomed its fourth generation of caretakers.
Michael and Allison Hiller.
Not just inheritors—but stewards of something deeply rooted. With them came both reverence for the past and a vision for what could still be.
Because that’s the thing about places like this—
they don’t stand still.
They grow.
π A New Chapter in Every Season
In that same year, Allison had an idea.
A quiet thought that would soon become something more.
A cidery.
Not just any cidery—but one built from the very apples grown, harvested, and nurtured on that same land.
By 2023, that idea took shape. And with determination (and more than a little grit), Michael and Allison—alongside family and friends—transformed existing barns into something new while honoring what came before.
A pole barn became a craft cider production space.
An 1896 farm barn became a tasting room.
History didn’t disappear… it was invited in.
And by March 2024, with the addition of a tasting room deck overlooking the orchard, the vision was complete. Local Finger Lakes businesses and vendors played a role in bringing it all to life—proof that even as things evolve, community remains at the heart of it all.
π A Day in the Orchard: U-Pick Traditions
There is something about picking your own fruit that feels… timeless.
Maybe it’s the way a basket grows heavier in your hand with each choice you make.
Maybe it’s the laughter of children weaving through the rows.
Or maybe it’s that quiet moment—standing beneath a tree—when you realize this is how memories are made.
At Apple Barrel Orchards, U-Pick isn’t just an activity… it’s a family day, a seasonal ritual, a return to something simple and real.
And as the seasons unfold, so do the flavors:
π Sweet Cherries (Late June / Early July)
Benton and Attika varieties—sun-warmed, sweet, and the first taste of summer’s promise.
π Gala Apples (Mid-September)
Sweet, juicy, and crisp—an early favorite that feels like the start of fall.
π McIntosh Apples (Mid-September)
A perfect balance—sweet with a tangy edge.
π Concord Grapes (Mid-September)
Deep purple, rich, and unmistakably nostalgic.
π Cortland Apples (Mid-September)
Juicy with a gentle tartness.
π Fuji Apples (Late September)
Very sweet, extremely juicy, and crisp.
π Empire Apples (Late September)
Sweet yet tart, and refreshingly juicy.
π Macoun Apples (Late September)
Extra-sweet, aromatic, and bursting with juice.
π Jonagold Apples (Late September)
Honey-sweet and full of flavor.
π Red Delicious (Early October)
Sweet, juicy, and crisp.
π Golden Delicious (Early October)
Mild, sweet, and easy to love.
π Northern Spy (Mid-October)
Crisp, juicy, and gently tart—the perfect close to the season.
A gentle reminder that Mother Nature does have some control over harvest times, so be sure to check with the orchard for availability.
π Crafted by Hand: The Apple Barrel Cidery
Step inside the barn… and you step into something special.
At Apple Barrel Orchards, cider isn’t just served—it’s crafted, right here, from the very fruit growing just beyond the doors.
Inside the beautifully restored 1896 barn, the tasting room invites you to slow down. To sip. To savor. Or, if the day calls for it, step outside onto the deck and take in the sweeping views of a working farm that has been generations in the making.
Cider here is offered your way—
a tasting flight to explore,
a 10oz glass to linger,
or a 16oz pour to fully settle in.
And if you find a favorite (you will), you can take it home—fill a reusable growler or bring your own and carry a piece of the orchard with you.
Because every cider here begins the same way:
In the orchard.
On the tree.
In the hands that harvest it.
Michael and Allison carefully select specific apple varieties—handpicked from their own orchards—to craft both alcoholic and non-alcoholic ciders. With thoughtfully chosen yeast strains, careful temperature control, and a deep respect for the process, each batch becomes something clean, crisp, and uniquely their own.
No shortcuts.
No additives.
No filtering.
No sulfites.
Just 100% real fruit juice, yeast, and carbon dioxide—
and a whole lot of heart behind it.
With nine ciders currently on tap, each one tells its own story—of the land, the season, and the people who continue to care for it.

You’ve been asking for it… and here it is.
