Spotlight on Local Fantasy Author Austin McManus

Some stories begin in far-off kingdoms. Others start in the places we know best—quiet neighborhoods, familiar streets, and the rolling hills of home. For fantasy author Austin McManus, the story begins right here in Corning, New York, where he was born and raised among the landscapes and community spirit that shape so many of us in Steuben County.

Though he’s now a Virginia transplant after graduating from George Mason University in 2018, Austin’s roots remain firmly planted in the Finger Lakes. His family—his parents and sister—still live in the Corning–Painted Post area, keeping him tied to the hometown traditions, memories, and values that helped mold him into the storyteller he is today.

✨ A Fantasy Voice Rooted in Home

Austin has always believed that storytelling is more than imagination—it’s connection. It’s the thread that links people to each other, to their past, and to the worlds they dream of building. That belief breathes life into his work, weaving together wonder, heart, courage, and the kind of sincerity that feels unmistakably local.

His favorite genre? Fantasy, of course.

But not just any fantasy. Austin gravitates toward stories that balance adventure with heart—tales where unlikely heroes emerge, where purpose is tested, and where characters find the bravery they never knew they had.

📘 The Debut Novel: The Last Protector (The Monarch Legends Book 1)

Austin’s debut novel, The Last Protector, invites readers into a vibrant, imaginative realm filled with magic, mystery, and unexpected heroism.

At the heart of the story is Moki, a talking beaver who dreams—against all odds—of joining the elite warriors known as the Protectors of Zera. When fate leads him to a mysterious man and his wolf, Moki’s journey becomes one of destiny, courage, and discovering who he’s meant to be.

It’s a tale overflowing with charm, heart, and adventure—perfect for fans of classic fantasy with an uplifting message. And though the world is fictional, there’s something unmistakably “homegrown” about the spirit of it.

💬 Why His Story Matters to Our Region

Here in the Finger Lakes, especially around Keuka and Corning, storytelling is part of our identity. Our communities are built on shared memories, local pride, and the kind of human connection that inspires creativity.

Austin’s journey—from a kid in Corning to a debut fantasy author—is a beautiful example of how our region shapes the storytellers who go on to shape others. His roots may stretch beyond New York now, but they still run deep through Steuben County soil.

For young writers, dreamers, and readers across the region, Austin’s path is a reminder:

Your story can start anywhere—even at home.
