The Keuka Ice Cream Trail

From Penn Yan to Bath —

Because Summer Around Keuka Tastes Better with Ice Cream

There are certain signs that summer has officially arrived around Keuka Lake.

The boats return to the water.

The windows roll down on Route 54.

Traffic slows just a little near the wineries.

And suddenly… ice cream becomes an acceptable meal again.

Honestly, around Keuka Lake and the hillsides stretching toward Bath, someone should create an official Ice Cream Trail map. Because within a short drive you can find homemade custards, farm-fresh frozen treats, roadside classics, and little seasonal stands that feel stitched directly into the memories of summer itself.

And with Mother Nature finally behaving today?

It feels like the perfect excuse to hit the road.

First Stop: Seneca Farms

Located just outside Penn Yan, Seneca Farms is practically a Keuka Lake institution.

For generations, families have made the drive there for two things:

fried chicken and homemade ice cream.

There is something wonderfully nostalgic about Seneca Farms. The walk-up windows. The crowded parking lot on warm evenings. Kids carrying towering cones almost too large to manage. The smell of summer somehow lingering in the air no matter what month it is.

Truthfully?

No Keuka Ice Cream Trail could ever begin anywhere else.

A Classic Stop: Mac’s Dairy Bar

If you grew up around the Finger Lakes, you probably already understand places like Mac’s.

Simple. Classic. Picnic tables. Soft serve cones melting faster than you can eat them.

Mac’s carries that timeless “summer vacation” feeling — the kind of place where memories quietly pile up year after year. Teenagers after baseball games. Families after a day on the lake. First dates. Road trip stops. Windows down. Country music playing softly somewhere in the background.

The best ice cream places are never just about ice cream.

They become landmarks in people’s lives.

Farm Fresh Magic: The Spotted Duck

Now this one feels uniquely Finger Lakes.

The Spotted Duck has become famous for its frozen custard made with duck eggs from the farm itself. And honestly? It somehow tastes richer, creamier, and completely different from ordinary ice cream.

But what really makes this place special is the atmosphere.

Ducks wandering nearby. Vineyard views. Picnic tables filled with visitors laughing in the evening light. Pizza ovens going. Kids running around the grass.

It feels less like stopping for dessert and more like stepping into one of those perfect little Finger Lakes summer evenings people spend all winter missing.

Lakeside Sweetness: Keuka Creamery

Down toward Hammondsport sits another local favorite.

Keuka Creamery has quietly become one of those essential summer stops around the south end of the lake. Soft serve, sundaes, flurries, towering cones — everything summer ice cream should be.

And honestly, after a day exploring Hammondsport, the wineries, the lake, or the little shops along the way, ice cream somehow feels less like an option and more like part of the itinerary.

And Then There’s Emmie’s

Every small town needs an ice cream place that feels woven into local life.

The kind of place where teenagers gather after school. Families stop after Little League games. Visitors accidentally discover it once… and then return every single summer afterward.

That is the feeling places like Emmie’s carry.

But honestly, Emmie’s is more than just ice cream.

It is the smell of burgers and foot longs sizzling on the grill. Crispy fries. Summer temptations calling from every direction on the menu. And the potato salad? Yes please.

It feels like one of those classic roadside summer stops where nobody is in a hurry and calories somehow stop counting for a little while.

Simple joys.

Small town traditions.

A little sweetness after long days.

The kind of places that remind us summer was never supposed to be complicated.

The Real Magic of the Ice Cream Trail

Truthfully, the ice cream itself is only part of the story.

What makes places like these matter is what surrounds them: The conversations.
The sunsets.
The lake air.
The memories quietly being made while nobody realizes they are becoming memories.

Because around Keuka Lake, ice cream has never just been dessert.

It is summer after church.
After boating.
After baseball.
After swimming.
After fireworks.
After long drives with nowhere particular to go.

It is childhood nostalgia served in a waffle cone.

And maybe that is why these places endure.

Because in a world moving faster every year, an ice cream stand still asks us to slow down for a little while.

And honestly?
Maybe that is exactly what summer around Keuka was always meant to be.

Stay Rooted. Stay Keuka.
