The Once Again Shoppe: Where Giving Finds New Life

Because every secondhand story deserves a second chance.

There are places you stop by out of routine — to run an errand, pick something up, or drop something off — and then there are places that seem to tug you back because of how they make you feel. For me, The Once Again Shoppe in Penn Yan is one of those places.

Tucked along East Elm Street, the little thrift shop hums with the kind of quiet goodness that only comes from decades of purpose and love. It’s more than racks of clothes or shelves of donated treasures — it’s a living reflection of community care, faith in action, and neighbors helping neighbors in the most genuine of ways.

A Story of Purpose and Second Chances

The Once Again Shoppe began as a ministry of the Penn Yan Area Council of Churches, later joining with Penn Yan Community Action Program (PYCAP) to expand its outreach. Its mission has always been simple but powerful: to provide quality clothing, furnishings, and every day needs and delights.

For more than three decades, this little shop has stitched together stories of kindness one donation, one purchase, one helping hand at a time. Step inside and you’ll often find volunteers — many of them retirees — sorting through donations, greeting familiar faces, or helping a young family find what they need. Their smiles say it all: this isn’t just work, it’s love in motion.

The Spirit of Community

There’s something comforting about knowing that every item here has a story. A child’s jacket once outgrown, a set of dishes that graced countless family dinners, a book that made someone laugh on a rainy afternoon — all finding new homes and new meaning.

When I stop in, I never fail to linger. There’s always a treasure waiting to be found — maybe a vintage teacup, a cozy sweater, or a handmade quilt that feels like it was sewn with warmth itself. But what I love most is the energy inside those walls: the laughter of volunteers sorting clothes, the quiet conversations at the checkout, the steady rhythm of generosity that beats like a heart behind the counter.

This is Penn Yan at its best — humble, hopeful, and rooted in caring for one another.

A Testament to Giving Back

The Once Again Shoppe is more than a thrift store; it’s a community anchor. Over the years, it’s supported countless families through difficult times, provided free essentials to those in need, and reinvested every sale back into helping others. Their work embodies what it means to live with intention — to see value in what others might overlook, and to offer dignity and comfort with every folded sweater and polished teapot.

The Shoppe’s primary staff is made up of dedicated community volunteers — neighbors who give their time, smiles, and compassion to keep this mission alive. If you’re looking for a meaningful way to give back to the community, volunteers are always needed and warmly welcomed. Whether you can offer a few hours a week or just help occasionally, every hand and every heart makes a difference.

Whenever I visit, I leave with more than I came for. Maybe it’s a simple trinket or a book I didn’t know I needed — but always, it’s with a sense of belonging and gratitude for a community that still believes in lifting one another up.
